December 21st marks this year’s upcoming Sabbat, the Winter Solstice, or “Yule” as it’s known.
Yule celebrations can be tailored to suit anyone’s traditions and preferences, as long as the core focus is honoring the cycles of nature, welcoming the return of light, and sharing feasts with plenty of warmth and goodwill toward others.
By now, you may have already been decorating your home with boughs of holly, candles, a tree, and the like.
There is so much symbolism around this time of year, and the use of evergreens, holly, pine, and mistletoe has a long history. Holly is known to ward off negativity, standing under the mistletoe leads to a kiss, and pine draws prosperity, abundance, success, and spiritual growth! So, there are reasons beyond just beauty for surrounding yourself with all the evergreens of the season.
Looking forward to the return of light can be celebrated in many ways, of course, but stringing up lights or having candles everywhere is simply a reminder to practice gratitude and foster good vibes toward those we are in contact with.
Sometimes, this isn’t so easy, especially when two or more gather. I do hope you have been limiting your time watching the news and being on social media!
This is the time of year to conjure up helpful and positive gatherings, and decline any invitations that are destructive to your PEACE.
The Goddess Freya is a helpful archetype to ponder. She is a Goddess of War, but she does not want you to wage one. Rather, she will teach you to be the eye in the storm and focus on your peace.
This requires conscious effort, meditation, breathing, perhaps some calming tea, and time outside in nature, etc.
Burning a Yule log is one traditional and popular activity. Write down things you want to let go of on small pieces of paper, then insert them into the log before burning it. Make this a family affair or a ritual as part of your Solstice gathering.
Cinnamon, which is a common spice especially this time of year, adds warmth, passion, and positivity. So sprinkle some around! Add it to coffee, tea, oatmeal, or whatever.
Goddess tip: It also deters ants if you have them.
While you are making your space all festive, remember to include dressing up your altar with December’s holiday bounty.
Lighten up the season, Goddess.
