Communicating with an unseen source—whether you call it God, Goddess, the Divine, Spirit, or something else—requires both clarity and faith.
When you speak, pray, or ask the Divine for guidance, it’s crucial to know what you are asking for and why. Words hold power, and clarity matters.
Words have power and need to be clear.
I once heard an expression from a spiritual teacher, Erika Knowles, who has since passed, but whose words have always stayed with me:
“I am the master of the unspoken word, and the spoken word masters me.”
This is worth pondering. How often do we blurt out the first thought that comes to mind, only to regret it later? The way we express ourselves requires both intention and interpretation.
Recently, I was reading about the ancient Welsh bardic tradition, which dates back over 2,000 years—long before Christ or even the geographical definition of Wales.
Bards played a crucial role in preserving history through oral tradition, which was later transcribed. However, because most of the early scribes were priests writing in Latin—by then heavily influenced by Christianity—some of the original meanings were altered or lost in translation.
Fast-forward to today, and modern scholars who speak Welsh can reinterpret these texts, uncovering deeper truths that often tell a different story than what was originally recorded.
I bring this up because the bards believed that “Awen”—their word for the source of all inspiration, or what we might call Spirit or God—brought them the words and poetry necessary to transform and enlighten their listeners.
Once again, words hold power, directly connected to Source energy.
By the way, the bardic stories of the time were believed to have come through Cerridwen and her cauldron. It was she who led them to the Awen. The bards revered her as their muse. However, she was not considered a Goddess at the time. Later, Christian priests vilified her as an ugly and dangerous witch—an all-too-familiar pattern that remains relevant today.
The Power of Clear Communication
So, what I want to emphasize is this: When communicating with Spirit—whether through prayer, affirmations, or setting intentions—it is essential to be clear, not confusing.
I used to make the mistake of combining multiple requests into one, thinking it would cover all bases. But this only creates ambiguity, making it difficult for the Universe to respond clearly.
Distilling our desires down to their essence by asking why we want them helps craft powerful, effective statements and clarifies the necessary next steps.
This applies not only to what we write but also to what we speak aloud.
Pay attention to how you ask and answer questions. Are you vague? Are you avoiding declaring what YOU truly want? Always seek the deeper why.
And, Goddess, if something isn’t fine with you, don’t say that it is.
Your words matter.
