Respect and Courtesy Go a Long Way to Open New Doors

This month, there are some combative astrological energies that might get in the way of harmonious relationships if we’re not mindful.

That said, there are far too many current social norms that seem to interfere with life satisfaction and general happiness.

For example, the use of profanity has become so normalized. There was a time when people were much more careful with their words, recognizing the power they hold.

Rather than agreeing to disagree, many now attack those with different viewpoints — projecting outright hostility. This behavior is especially common on social media, where there’s little accountability.

I’m not a fan of modern-day sitcoms or reality shows either, because of the blatant snarkiness that pretends to be wit and humor. Instead, it dulls our ability to communicate truthfully and genuinely. We see this every day on the news as well.

This is terrible role modeling.

Respect — “the willingness to look again” — combined with courtesy, from the old French word cortoisie, meaning “courtliness” or “elegance of manners,” seems to have been lost to us.

Even among our loved ones, it’s common to take for granted how we speak to them, often using a tone that doesn’t convey respect or courtesy. This goes for kids and pets, too.

This does not bode well for our most valued relationships, let alone society as a whole.

Our listening skills also need attention and improvement. We are in great need of change — not just in how we communicate with one another, but also in the small voice inside our own heads. Typically, the way we speak to ourselves is not very kind.

Much of what we communicate isn’t verbal either. Rolling eyes, head shaking, finger pointing, and irritated facial expressions should all be held in better check.

Count to ten before responding in a difficult moment. Excuse yourself by stepping away — get a drink of water or take a bathroom break — while you reframe and regroup your thoughts.

If we truly want the world to change, we must change first.

“When you blame others, you give up the power to change.”
— Robert Anthony
